There are a few ways that a roof top tent can be fitted:
- The most common way to fit a roof top tent is a U-bolt system which is usually 2 bolts that slide into the channel under the tent that will hang down either side of your roof racks and a flat plate (some tents will have plate that is bent to the shape of a roof rack) under the roof rack secured by nyloc nuts.
- Another method is drilling though your racks e.g. trade bars on the back of a Ute/truck or a steel canopy. Once the holes are drilled, slide the bolts that come with the tent (these may require longer bolts, depending on what you have drilled through) into the underside channel of the tent and secure under the rack/canopy with a large washer or flat plate with a nyloc nut.
- Finally, some roof top tents come with a quick-release mounting system (others you can purchase a quick release system seperately). These will either clamp around the roof racks or bolt into the channel of a roof rack.
When trying to fit a roof top tent to a platform any of these methods can work depending on what brand and style of platform you have. But because every platform can be different you may be required to purchase a tent kit to get your roof top tent to mount to the platform most of these will be a channel mount system.
